Dr. Oz Three Tests Every Woman Needs To Take

Dr. Oz closed down an entire New York City block to for the Walgreen's Way to Well Tour traveling health van. The Walgreen's Way to Well Tour brings free health checks to communities in need and provides the health checks for free.

Three tests are administered in the Walgreen's Way to Well van to determine a base-line of health, the same health tests Dr. Oz wants every woman to take. Click here to go to Walgreens.com to find a Way to Well Tour event near you.

Walgreen's Way to Well program aims to test participants for cholesterol and glucose without fasting, blood pressure, and a weight and fat assessment to determine muscle mass and fat burning capability. Specialists gather all the information then discuss any health concerns. The process takes about 20 minutes from start to finish. Then entire Dr. Oz Show audience had all three tests completed.

These are health numbers that are so simple to get and often are free in many communities. Dr. Oz says knowing you're normal takes away a worry. If tests come back higher than normal, there's no time like now to make changes to changes those numbers.

Stacia Woodcock, Walgreens Pharmacist, says the Way to Well program is a 4-year, $1 million initiative to provide early detection for preventable diseases. The goal is to empower people to lead a healthy, longer life.

[Dr. Oz is marketing this show to his target demographic – women. This show is titled “Health Tests for Women” however I would put out there that these tests are extremely important for men as well.]

Dr. Oz Health Test #1: Weight and Fat Assessment
A weight and fat assessment is more than standing on a scale. Way to Well measures the body composition of fat and muscle. To determine how much skeletal muscle you have and therefore whay you're calorie burning potential.

Alicia, age 27, has 24% skeletal muscle. The goal for her age should be over 30%. Many think that men need all the muscle but muscle is also important for women. Muscle allows you to lose weight even if you are eating more than you should.

What difference does muscle make? Dr. Oz had another woman, age 27, on the stage who was also a body builder. The body builder had the same size body as Alicia however the body builder had greater muscle mass and can burn an additional 300 calories a day because of it.

Dr. Woodcock says the solution to building muscle mass is to eat lean protein. She likes to start the day with eggs to build lean muscle. Dr. Oz recommends using the supplement creatine, 2 grams daily, to give muscles more energy. He says creatine can be added to a smothie or a shake.

Dr. Oz Health Test #2: Blood Pressure
Get your blood pressure checked at Walgreen's for free any time in addition to the Way to Well van. Walgreen's also sells machines for people to check their blood pressure at home. Many people get their blood pressure checked yet don't believe their number especially when the number comes back high.

The idea blood pressure is 115/75., hypertension is 140/90 and above. The audience member's blood pressure came back at 131/90, in the pre-hypertensive range.

Dr. Oz explained that the lining of the arteries are supposed to be smooth but, high blood pressure acts like a hammer chipping away at the arteries and can even break through the wall of the artery causing internal bleeding.

Dr. Woodcock recommends taking COQ10, 200mg daily, to help keep the blood vessels healthy 200mg and to protect against damage from high blood pressure. Dr. Oz recommends eating a clove of garlic daily.

Dr. Oz Health Test #3: Blood Test for Glucose and Cholesterol
The Way to Well glucose and cholesterol test requires only one prick on the finger and one drop of blood. Both blood glucose and cholesterol levels are indicators of disease, diabetes and heart disease.

A fasting blood glucose level should be between 70 and 100. If that number is between 100 and 125 it is a sign of pre-diabetes. Over 126 or higher is an indicator of diabetes. Non-fasting blood glucose numbers should not be over 200. The audience member tested had a blood glucose level of 84, normal.

Dr. Oz explained that sugar in the blood stream is like shards of glass racing and tearing, literaly, through the lining of the blood vessels and arteries. All the little tears caused by sugar weaken the arteries and cause the body to fix these tears over and over again.

Dr. Woodcock recommends taking magnesium, 400mg daily, to play a role in managing blood sugar levels. She explained that many diabetics are deficient in this important nutrient. Dr. Oz recommended chromium polynicotinate, 200mcg daily, to help balance blood sugar levels.

Blood cholesterol levels should ideally be less than 200. The audience member tested had a blood cholesterol level of 224 and shared that this may have been the first time her cholesterol had ever been tested.

Dr. Oz recommended coconut oil to support HDL, or good, cholesterol levels. He says 1 tablespoon daily can be taken either straight or used in cooking. Dr. Woodcock recommended taking red yeast rice, 1,200 mg twice daily, as a natural alternative to pharmaceuticals that works like a statin to stop the formation of cholesterol in the blood and help manage cholesterol.

Dr. Oz Drug Store Energy Boosters

Skip the caffeine and sugar, says Dr. Oz, and head to the drug store to find the best and surprising energy boosters.

Dr. Oz Drug Store Energy Booster #1: Nuts in the Grocery Aisle
Nuts contain magnesium which can help to balance blood sugar levels. Dr. Oz recommended specially coated nuts such as roasted dark chocolate almonds to provide some sweetness with the protein and fiber. Cinnamon coated nuts help you feel full plus the cinnamon also plays a role in blood sugar balancing.

Dr. Oz Drug Store Energy Booster #2 Whey Protein in the Supplement Aisle
Whey protein, says Dr. Oz, releases hormones to allow cells to produce energy more effectively. He recommends drinking a whey protein smoothie in the morning.

Dr. Oz Drug Store Energy Booster #3: Shampoo in the Beauty Aisle
Dr. Oz recommends using a shampoo with a natural citrus scent to help boost energy levels and power you up for the day. He recommends Desert Essence Lemon Tea Tree Shampoo and GUD by Burt's Bees Orange Petalooza Shampoo.

Dr. Oz Drug Store Energy Booster #4: Sugarless Gum at the Check-Out Counter
Studies have shown that chewing gum can help to reduce stress and keeps you more alert. Chewing gum activate muscles in the mouth and skull. Dr. Oz says mint flavored gum is best and he recommends sugarless gum. [Read the label and stay away from artificial flavors which have their own health implications.]

Dr. Oz has brought together to best beauty product recommendations to cheat your age. From the most popular beauty blog on the web with its finger on the pulse of beauty products, DailyGlow.com, come products tested by experts and readers of the blog.

Ms. Scrivo says it takes 3-4 weeks to start to see smoothing and lightening of the skin.

Dr. Oz Do-It-Yourself Face-Lift

Dr. Shirley Madhere, plastic surgeon, says plastic surgery is not for everyone. Many women are looking for solutions they can use at-home to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Madhere joins Dr. Oz to share her best at-home products that can provide some of the effects of a face-lift without going under the knife.

Dr. Oz showed an animation of what actually happens during a face-life. The skin is tethered to the underlying bones by connective tissues and muscle. Aging causes stretching and sagging of the skin. During a face-lift, the skin of the face is peeled off from the hairline and the underlying tissue is trimmed to pull the tissue tighter. Excess skin is cut off and reattached.

Dr. Oz At-Home Face-Lift #1: Saggy Cheeks
To reduce the appearance of saggy cheeks, Dr. Madhere says you need a three step process of smoothing, tightening, and plumping.

Step 1: Exfoliate to smooth the skin by using a mixture of 2 tablespoons brown sugar with 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil.

Step 2: Tighten the skin with a mixture of 1 cup rose water, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon witch hazel, with 5 drops of almond oil.

Step 3: Plump the skin with a mask based on your favorite moisturizer. Mix 2 tablespoons of any moisturizer with 2 pinches of turmeric, 1 egg white and ½ teaspoon of manuka honey. The mixture should creamy and applied in upward strokes. Use the masks 2-3 times a week or daily.

Dr. Oz At-Home Face-Lift #2: Laugh Lines
Dr. Madhere recommends the Dermawand, cost $120, to help reduce the appearance of laugh lines. The Dermawand uses radio frequency and electrical current to smooth out the skin.

Dr. Oz At-Home Face-Lift #3: Overall Wrinkles
The key to reducing the overall appearance of wrinkles is to smooth the skin. Dr. Madhere recommends Pomega5 Grenade Anti Rides Nourishing Cream, cost $78.00. [Pomega 5 says the cost is $60.] She says the product provides important oils that are beneficial to the skin. One jar will last 6-9 months, she says. [Pomega 5 says the product contains jojoba oil, olive oil, pomegranate seed oil, rose oil, carrot oil, and many, many, many other oils.]

Dr. Oz Three Ways to Trick Body Into Feeling Younger

Dr. Oz says this is his anti-aging arsenal, smart ideas to feeling younger.

Dr. Michael Cirigliano, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr Cirigliano is celebrating 20 years of serving patients who want to feel healthy as they age. Daily, he hears complaints about foot pain, joint pain, and back pain. People want to feel physically well so they can be active as they age.

Dr. Oz Trick to Feel Younger #1: Knee Pain
Dr. Oz showed an animation of knee pain. The knee joint is where different bones come together and are supposed to glide smoothly along the cartilage. Irritation and inflammation can cause pain when the bones rub. Moving the joints becomes challenging and damage can occur to the joint causing pain.

Dr. Cirigliano recommends taking glucosamine and chondroitin in a combined product with 1,500mg of glucosamine and 1,000mg of chondroitin once daily. He explained that under a microscope, after taking this product cartilage glides better.

Dr. Oz Trick to Feel Younger #2: Foot Pain
Dr. Cirigliano showed a demonstration of the bones, muscles, and connective tissue of the foot bone. There are 26 bones and 36 joints in the foot. The more you weigh the more weight is going onto the feet which can effect the joints causing arthritis and pain.

Dr. Cirigliano recommends using topical arnica cream on the feet as an anti-inflammatory, applying after soaking the feet. Dr. Oz says he uses this at home.

Stretching and strengthening the muscles and joints of the big toes can help to reduce foot pain, says Dr. Cirigliano. He recommends using a rubber band wrapped around each toe. Use the hand to pull up on the rubber band to increase tension then move the feet outward to increase flexibility.

Dr. Oz Trick to Feel Younger #3: Back Pain
It's hard to stay active with back pain. Dr. Oz showed an animation of the spine where each vertebrae is shaped differently. Discs along the spine are cushioned between soft spongy material that can become inflamed causing pain. Dr. Cirigliano recommends taking the anti-inflammatory herb devil's claw, 500mg daily, which can reduce the need for ibuprofen that can hurt the stomach.

Yoga and stretching can keep your back young. It's a use it or lose it proposition. Dr. Cirigliano's favorite stretch is the superman stretch. [Click here for the description of locust pose from YogaJournal.com. Dr. Oz demonstrated the same pose while reaching the arms and hands forward.] Hold the pose for 5 seconds then repeat.
