Dr. Oz Warning Signs You're Aging Too Fast
How often do you stare in the mirror and count wrinkles? Could you be aging too fast or are you aging normally? Dr. Oz has gathered four top dermatologists to discuss four common signs of aging and how to slow down that process.
Four audience members brought their premature aging concerns to the stage along with a current picture of their concern area. Dr. Oz showed their current concern area and then dramatized to photo to show what the area will look like in 10 years. It wasn't pretty but, it was inspiring. Taking care of your skin today can help you look younger 10 years from now.
Dr. Oz: #1 Warning Sign You're Aging Too Fast - Forehead Wrinkles
Dr. Marmur has a Three Wrinkle Rule when it comes to the forehead. If you're less than 30 and can see three or more wrinkles on the forehead when raising the eye brows then it's a sign that you are aging too fast.
To restrengthen the forehead muscles, Dr. Marmur recommends using
Frownies Facial Patches. Frownies has an entire line of patches to target wrinkle concerns on the face. They are essentially thick stickers you place on the face.
Before applying Frownies, rub the forehead for a few seconds to stimulate circulation. Spray the Frownie with rose water and apply to the forehead with the eye brows raised. Apply Frownies at night and leave on overnight.
Cost: $20
[Frownies also has patches for lip lines, under eye wrinkles, crows feet and more.]
Dr. Oz: #2 Warning Sign You're Aging Too Fast – Gray Hair
Dr. Howard Brooks, MD,
SKIN Cosmetic Dermatology of Georgetown, says that genetics play a role in graying hair. We all gray, eventually but, there are factors that make it happen faster than we want. Look at your hair brush monthly, or every 2 months, to determine if the number of gray hairs has increased.
Stress, both internal and external, can cause hair to turn gray and so can exposure to hydrogen peroxide. Check the label of products you use from foods to cosmetics and look for hydrogen peroxide. If you find it on the ingredients and think your hair is turning gray prematurely then you may want to consider finding a different product that does not have hydrogen peroxide.
Dr. Brooks recommends taking chlorella, 1000mg daily, to support the natural color of the hair.
Dr. Oz: #3 Warning Sign You're Aging Too Fast – Sun Spots on Back of Hands
Dr. Jordana Gilman, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, says that the age when sun spots show up depends on sun exposure and skin type. The more fair the skin, the sooner sun spots will show up.
Sun spots will first appear as light brown and smooth. As the we and the spots age, the spots will darken and get rougher. Dr. Gilman says to check the health of the hands on your skin by pinching the back of the hand and let go. If you're under 40, the skin should bounce back quickly. If there is not bounce back, the skin has lost some elasticity [it could also be a sign of dehydration].
To check the health of the skin on the hands, says Dr. Gilman, compare them with the skin on your face. We tend to take better care of our face then we do our hands.
Rub lemon juice on the hands to fade and exfoliate the skin on the hands, says Dr. Gilman. Cut a lemon in half and rub it on the hands. Lemon juice contains alpha-hydroxy acids and acts as a light chemical peel. The citric acid in lemons also acts as a natural bleach to the skin.
Dr. Gilman also recommends
Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Gel – a product that she uses every day. Phloretin contains antioxidants that treat and lighten spots and protects against damage that can lead to new spots. Apply once in morning. She says to treat the hands and face at same time every morning.
Cost: about $50 per month
Dr. Oz: #4 Warning Sign You're Aging Too Fast – Saggy Knees
This is the first time this has been discussed on The Dr. Oz Show but Dr. Oz was surprised by how many women were complaining about the skin on their knees are sagging. Skin tone, genetics, lack of exercise, and rapid weight gain all contributes to sagging knees.
Dr. Jeanine Downie, MD,
Image Dermatology used calipers to measure fat on the audience member's knees. Fat accumulation and a loss of collagen can contribute to sagging skin on the knees. At home, you can check the elasticity of the skin by sitting down then standing up. Look at the knees and see if the skin above the knees is wrinkling.
Cost: about $40 at department store and online

Dr. Oz: What Can Handwriting Tell About Your Health?
Dr. Oz asked audience members and viewers to write down two phrases in lower case cursive for this next segment.
Phrase 1: she sells sea shells by the seashore
Phrase 2: the tide is wide
Dr. Oz shared that he was a little skeptical about what his next guest has to say but that he's coming around. What can your handwriting tell you about your chance of having a heart attack?
Ms. McKnight says there are over 5,000 messages that your handwriting can tell you about your health. The lower-case cursive “f” is representative of the entire body, top to bottom. Looking at how you form this letter can give clues about your brain health, if you're pregnant, and even about the health of your feet.
In the first phrase, she sells sea shells by the sea shore, look at how your “s” is formed. An “s” that is opened at the bottom indicated that the writer is giving away their power to other people.
Dr. Oz share his writing sample, with wide open “s” formation. Ms. McKnight said his writing shows that he is agreeable and agreed that the could be more assertive at home.
How do you change that personality trait?
Ms. McKnight says she's been quoting Dr. Oz for years in her lectures: “The need to please leads to heart disease”. When we try too hard to please everyone around us, we can put our health at jeopardy. Handwriting therapy can lead to a change in behavior.
Simply closing up that “s” can lead to learning to say “no” when appropriate. The goal behind handwriting therapy is to be more mindful in writing which translates to being more mindful in your behavior and actions.
If your lower-case “L” has a indentation, like a carrot mark on the side, this letter formation could indicate heart disease and should be checked out right away, says Ms. McKnight.
Phrase number two, the tide is wide, can indicate signs of depression. Look at the “t”. An “t” shows the person is ultra-sensitive to criticism. If the loop in “d” is open, the person is not taking care of themselves. Looking at the “i”, if the leading line of the “i” begins downward and goes up sharply that's not a good thing. Ms. McKnight says that Ted Bundy's “i” were always formed like this.
Can you adjust your mood by adjusting your letter writing?
You can do so much more, says Ms. McKnight. Handwriting can provide an insight to health and mood and by understanding the meaning behind letter formations you can change many aspects of your life. Ms. McKnight says she knew a parole officer who used handwriting therapy to change the moods or prisoners.
Dr. Oz says he has used handwriting analysis with stroke and Alzheimer's patients to monitor their disease progression but has never used it as a preventative. He finds the practice intriguing.
Dr. Oz What Can Body Language Say About Your Health?
Did you know that someone who rubs their nose while talking may be lying? Biting your lip indicates nervousness. Darting eyes can be a sign of confusion and lack of confidence.
Being aware of changes in body language can be the first defense against disease – if you know what to look for.
Janine Driver, body language expert, says body language can show signs of health concerns before we even know it. There are several body language ques that we need to be aware of in order to understand our own health.
Dr. Oz Body Language Clues to Health – Excessive Yawning
Alicia, an audience member was caught on camera yawning. She says she's tired and stressed not because she was bored by the show. Ms. Driver says if you find yourself yawning while eating, yawning in middle of a sentence and you're not tired and not bored and not following someone else's yawn then you need to be checked out by a doctor. Excessive yawning an be a sign of changes in breathing patterns stemming from heart health issues.
Dr. Oz Body Language Clues to Health - Blinking
The average blink rate is 4-14 blinks per minute. Find your personal blink rate baseline by asking someone to count your blinks over one minute or look in the mirror and them yourself. Dr. Oz has a blink rate of 20-25 per minute, a little high but he's under the bright studio lights.
An elevated blink rate could indicate a cold coming on or could be a clue into worsening auto-immune issues. Decreased blink rate could indicate Parkinson's disease or other neurological issue.
Dr. Oz Body Language Clues to Health - Decreased Gestures
People who talk with their hand or are animated when talking are called illustrators. A decrease in gestures while talking could be a sign of depression which starts with a decrease in motivation and energy and thus a decrease in gestures.
Dr. Oz is an illustrator – a series of clips showed his various and highly animated gestures during segments of the show. Ms. Driver says Dr. Oz's gestures shows that he is a likable person and loves what he does. If there is a segment where Dr. Oz does not have gestures then, says Ms. Driver, he needs to see his own doctor to check for depression.
Dr. Oz: 5 Health Clues in the Palm of Your Hand
Dr. Oz says there are five health secrets that are shown in your hands.
Deborah Flanagan, Reiki master and Certified Reflexologist, says the hands and feet are a microcosm of the entire body. She shares techniques that can help you get more in touch with your health.
Dr. Oz #1 Health Clue in the Palm of Your Hand - Digestion Issues
Feeling bloated, constipated, and drained energy? It could be a sluggish digestive tract. Ms. Flanagan says her Million Dollar Golf Ball Technique can provide support and relief to digestive issues.

If there are digestive issues, Ms. Flanagan says this area of the hand will feel a little crunchy. To relieve and ease the digestion by doing the Million Dollar Golf Ball Technique for 30-45 seconds twice a day for a few weeks.
Dr. Oz #2 Health Clue in the Palm of Your Hand - Exhaustion and Insomnia

In the middle of the thumb, at thumb print press and rub with the nail of your other thumb. This area will feel like metal ball or pins if you've got the right spot.

The spine reflexes reside along the thumb going down to the wrist. If an area is more sensitive then spend more time gently rubbing that spot.

The reproductive reflexes reside along the wrist. Ms. Flanagan says to make a bracelet with your other hand and twist the wrist in the bracelet. Do this to both wrists 2-3 times a day to feel more energized.
