Self-proclaimed guinea pig, Tim Ferris, entrepreneur and best-selling author of The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman [as well as the wildly popular The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich] says he tests weight loss theories on himself. If something works for him then his blog readers test it and if it passes their tests then he shares the theory with the world.
Mr. Ferris says people don't understand they have the ability to change how their body looks, feels, and performs. Calories don't stick to Mr. Ferris, he says. Metabolism can be changed and manipulated to your own needs. Better sleep and more energy is possible for everyone.
Dr. Oz says that most tests are done in a lab and while he doesn't condone this, he says that Mr. Ferris' results have been shown to work with only a little extra effort. Three women were invited onto the show to share a common health complaint and Dr. Oz wants to challenge Mr. Ferris to present a jump-start solution.
Supercharge Metabolism
Latoya, from the audience, stood on the stage in a bathrobe with a bathing suit underneath pensive to take part in the metabolism boosting activity.
5 Minute Deep Freeze
Mr. Ferris explained that a NASA scientist experienced the problem of not losing those final pounds and wondered how Olympic swimmer Micheal Phelps could eat 10,000 to 12,000 calories a day and stay thin. Mr. Phelps is exposed to cold which plays a factor in revving up his metabolism.
Exposing the body to five minutes of cold temperatures with a cold shower can help to activate what is known as “brown” fat that in turn burns ordinary fat. Those stubborn last few pounds that cause many people to plateau can potentially be burned off by cooling off.
Start with a few minutes under cold water in the shower and work the temperature down to 60F and work up to five minutes total. Mr. Ferris said people could even start with placing with ice packs on the back of the neck while watching TV.
Latoya dawned a purple bathing cap and turned the shower to cold, then she yelled and started shaking. She's a good sport! Latoya said she would absolutely be willing to try this technique and could possibly be shocked into not eating again from the cold water.
Supercharge Your Mood
Alice said when she gets overwhelmed she becomes grumpy. To support mood, Mr. Ferris says to balance the gut bacteria.
Kimchi Kickstart
Good bacteria in gut is responsible for 95% of serotonin produced. Supporting the population of good bacteria in the gut will help the body produce the neurotransmitters necessary for good mood. Eating
4-5 tablespoons of kimchi, fermented vegetables popular in Asian culture, can provide a boost to good bacteria. Mr. Ferris says for people who may not like the spicy flavor could try yogurt.
Supercharge Your Sleep
Carmen says she tosses and turns all night then wakes up tired. She's in bed for 8 hours but is not sleeping the entire time.
Butter Before Bedtime Rule
Mr. Ferris thinks Carmen could benefit from the butter before bedtime rule. Mr. Ferris says he was surprised by this information but found that it works for many people. He recommends eating 2 tablespoons of almond butter before bed to help in stabilizing blood sugar levels. Often people feel tired upon waking not because of bad sleep but because of blood sugar imbalance. Balancing the blood sugar with almond butter before bed can make three hours of sleep feel like six hours of sleep.
Sleep Position
Body position makes a difference in how well you sleep. There is, what is known as, a sleep power position. Dr. Oz had never heard of it and not one audience member had heard about it. Mr. Ferris explained that the position is similar to swaddling a baby in that this position prevents the body from moving and, ideally, can help reduce the tossing and turning.
Lay on your stomach with the left arm parallel to your body and palm up, the right arm up at 90 degrees, and the right leg up at 90 degrees.
Three Things To Do Within 30 Minutes of Waking Up
Carrie wakes up to her two children and her morning is all about them. Once the kids are on the school bus she can finally take care of herself. Dr. Oz has previously talked about getting 30g of protein within 30 minutes of waking up. Take that rule and build upon it with these three new rules.
Morning Rule #1: Use full-fat cream in your coffee
Full-fat cream does not spike blood sugar levels. Mr. Ferris says that women have been known to lose 2 pounds of fat by using 2 tablespoons of full-fat cream to a cup of coffee. It's easy and it's tasty, he says.
Morning Rule #2: Drink Fat Flushing Yerba Mate Tea
Yerba Mate, a traditional South American tea supports weight loss through two mechanisms. The first mechanism is by speeding up the digestion process and the second is to reduce the absorption of fat and Yerba Mate is full of antioxidants and vitamins.
Morning Rule #3: Cassia Cinnamon Cheat
This third rule can be used in combination with the first two rules. Not all cinnamon is created equal. Think of cassia cinnamon as blood sugar insurance. The most commonly used cinnamon is ceylon [also known as true cinnamon] which when you look at the sticks, both sides scroll into the center. But, cassia cinnamon sticks roll in one direction. Cassia cinnamon is believed to have a more powerful effect on supporting healthy blood sugar levels. Add some cinnamon to your yogurt. [Note: powdered cinnamon may not be labeled either ceylon or cassia. Contact the manufacturer if you have questions about the type of cinnamon in the product.]

Jorge Cruise, fitness expert, weight-loss coach and New York Times bestselling author of The Belly Fat Cure has five ways to help boost energy. [Click here to read an excerpt and buy a copy of The Belly Fat Cure on DoctorOz.com.]
#1 for More Energy: Skinny Muffin
Mr. Cruise has put together a recipe for quick microwave muffins without sugar. [If you've been reading WatchingDrOz this season then you know how I feel about the use of microwave ovens. Read my opinion about microwaves as well as scientific research detailing the dangers of using them: here, here, and here.]
Coconut oil is the skinny secret in this recipe because the fat doesn't get stored as belly fat instead it fuels the brain and provides long-lasting energy. Cinnamon supports the immune system. All the ingredients are mixed in a coffee cup and zapped for 55 seconds. There's no sugar but taste-testers reported the skinny muffin tastes sweet.
Jorge’s Skinny Muffin
Makes one serving
1/4 cup ground flax
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp coconut oil
1 egg
1 packet stevia
Directions
Mix all ingredients together in a mug and microwave for 50 seconds. Allow to cool to a safe temperature and enjoy!
#2 for More Energy: Lemon-Limeade Drink
Mr. Cruise has a drink to boost alertness simply with its scent. With stevia, so it's sugar-free, mint for zip, and the citrus scent of lemon this drink is made to help feel mentally better. Dr. Oz shared that by smelling Vitamin C [such as citrus foods] can help stimulate alertness.

#3 for More Energy: Blue Light
A day-light simulating light bulb can help boost your energy. Look for a bulb that is labeled 5,000k+ to imitate daylight but only use during the day – you don't want to wake up at bedtime, right! Available at home improvement stores for around $6.
#4 for More Energy: Alpha Lipoic Acid
Mr. Cruise recommends taking 200-400mg day of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) in the morning. ALA supports the body in metabolizing energy more efficiently.
#5 for More Energy: Superman Stability Pose
No gym is necessary to complete this exercise, you can use a table or, use the floor for the biggest challenge. Get into a plank pose, with back straight and both arms on the table then lift one arm like you're flying through the air, hold one minute then switch arms. This pose works the arms, the core, the back, the butt. The goal is to have good posture and this exercise creates naturally good posture.
