DHA - Docosahexaenoic acid
On the 5/31/12 episode of The Dr. Oz Show, The Memory Cure, Dr. Oz discussed the importance of supplements to support brain health and memory.

This component of the essential fatty acid omega-3, called DHA, increases blood flow, decreases inflammation, reduces plaques in the brain. Dr. Fotuhi recommends taking 600mg of DHA daily for at least six months to build memory and support the brain so it functions as if it were three years younger.

Dr. Oz says DHA is the most important supplement ever discussed on The Dr. Oz Show. If he had the choice of taking only one supplement, DHA would be the one.

EPA - Eicosapentaenoic Acid
EPA is a component of omega-3 fatty acids primarily found in cold water fish. The fat EPA focuses on heart health from modulating inflammation to supporting healthy blood pressure levels to helping the body slow the build of arterial plaques.

DMAE - Dimethylaminoethanol
From DrWeil.com: “DMAE is a substance naturally produced in small amounts in the brain and also found in anchovies and sardines. DMAE supplements are promoted to boost brainpower, improve memory, and slow aging. The idea that DMAE can improve memory stems from research suggesting it may increase levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is believed to play an important role in learning and memory.”

EFA – Essential Fatty Acids
EFA's is the general term for healthy fats including DHA, fish oil, primrose oils, and so on. EFA's are considered healthy fats and are primarily known for supporting heart health and healthy skin.

  1. I believe flax seeds has Omega 3. Can one take ground flax seeds and get the DHA one needs to improve memory?

    1. Thanks for your question. Flax seeds do contain omega-3 and DHA but in small quantities. Flax seeds are typically looked at for their fiber content. A person would have to eat ridiculous amounts of flax seeds with grave risks to their intestinal tract to equal the amount of omega-3 contained in the supplement form.
