Dr. Oz: Dr. Andrew Weil's Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Dr. Oz started today's show by saying that common chronic conditions can be managed with an anit-inflammatory diet. The Standard American Diet (SAD), encourages inflammation in the body, explained Dr. AndrewWeil. He has written a new cookbook which he said can turn your kitchen into a pharmacy.

True Food, the new cookbook by Dr. Andrew Weil, is about eating and cooking food while keeping it in a natural state. The foods he cooks with are great tasting and they also happen to be good for you.

Inflammation is the body's way of healing however if the inflammation persists and, as Dr. Weil says, serves no purpose it can lead to chronic conditions. SAD gives you the wrong kind of fats and not enough antioxidants.

For good health, Dr. Weil said you have to start with good nutrition then add in exercise and plenty of sleep. The adage “you are what you eat” is entirely true however it's not practiced nor encouraged in western medicine. How and what you eat can protect health and or it can harm health.

[Breaking news on the Jessica Ridgeway case. Sadly, police officials announced that Jessica's body has been identified. My heart goes out to Jessica's family and friends. This is such a tragedy. I missed a large portion of today's episode.]

Dr. Oz: Anti-Inflammatory Foods from Dr. Weil #1: Carotenoid-Rich Fruits and Veggies
Carotenoids provide a wealth of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Focus on foods with bright colors such as carrots, butternut squash, purple cabbage. Eating 4-5 servings of carotenoid fruit and vegetables each day supports health inflammation levels in the body.

In Dr. Weil's new cookbook True Food he shares an antioxidant packed Curried Cauliflower soup recipe that provides a full cup of carotenoid vegetables along with turmeric and health olive oil.

Dr. Oz: Anti-Inflammatory Foods from Dr. Weil #2: Whole and Cracked Grains
Grains that are closer to their natural forms support healthy levels of inflammation in the body as opposed to more processed grains such as those found in bread, even whole wheat bread. Grains such as quinoa, barley, and brown rice provide vital nutrients and are digested slowly by the body.

Dr. Oz: Anti-Inflammatory Foods from Dr. Weil #3: Oils with Polyphenols
Polyphenols are inflammation fighting nutrients found in extra virgin oil as well as walnuts, cashews, and avocados. Eating 5-7 servings of pholyphenol-rich foods daily can support the body in maintaining healthy levels of inflammation as well as to burn of other unhealthy fats stored in the body.

Dr. Oz: Anti-Inflammatory Foods from Dr. Weil #4: Fish and Seafood
Many foods from the ocean contains high levels of healthy fat omega-3 and have been strongly connected with managing healthy inflammation levels in the body. Two to four servings, about 4 ounces per serving, of omega-3 rich foods is recommended: black cod, salmon, and sardines are great options.

Dr. Oz: Anti-Inflammatory Foods from Dr. Weil #5: Herbs and Spices
Herbs and spices can not only increase the flavor of your food they can also increase support of healthy inflammation in the body. Turmeric is a favorite of Dr. Oz as well as Dr. Weil, also use cinnamon, chili pepper, and basil.

Dr. Weil shared a drink that is packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants, Sea Buckthorn Elixir. Click here for Dr. Weil's Sea Buckthorn Elixir recipe on DoctorOz.com.

Dr. Oz: Pain Solution #1: Vitamin B-12
When back and neck pain is experienced, Dr. Oz explained that nerves along the spinal column and pushed by discs in the spinal column inflaming those nerves causing pain along the spine and up to the neck.

Dr. Oz said that taking 1mg of Vitamin B-12 daily may provide support to the protective sheath along the spinal column to reduce the effects of pressure on the spinal nerves. [B-12 is often measured and labeled in mcg instead of mg. 1,000mcg is the equivalent of 1mg.]

Dr. Oz: Pain Solution #2: Capsaicin
Dr. Oz recommends massaging capsaicin cream on to areas of the back and neck that are painful. Capsaicin comes from chili peppers and can stimulate the nerve fibers and sooth those same fibers. Capsaicin has been recommended to ease the effects of back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and even headaches.

Headaches too? Dr. Oz recommended using a capsaicin nasal spray to support the body during a headache. It will sting the nostrils a little but the stinging sensation should go away quickly and so should the headache pain.

Dr. Oz: Pain Solution #3: Boswellia
Joint pain from the knees to the hips can cause debilitating pain. Normal joints have cushioning cartilage to protect the joint during movement. Overtime the cartliage can wear down creating inflammation and pain in the joints. Dr. Oz recommends boswellia daily to support inflammation.
40% concentration acid 300mg daily

Dr. Oz: Pain Solution #4: Powdered Ginger
It's a spice commonly found in the spice cabinet or the tea cupboard. Dr. Oz prefers his morning ginger drink straight up. Mix ½ teaspoon of ginger powder into water and drink. If the taste is too strong, then adding it to a fruit juice such as lemonade can help tone down the kick some people taste. Ginger powder can be readily found in the the spice section of most grocery stores.

What's the worst day of the week for pain on the Dr. Oz Pain Poll? Monday! Is it any surprise?

Dr. Oz's pain solutions 5-7 can be utilized 2-3 days a week for more occasional pains.

Dr. Lillie Rosenthal, DO, is an integrative physician with board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She explained that pain is a vicious cycle where pain in one area can aggravate another area and then pain can be felt in multiple areas. Identifying the source of the original pain, said Dr. Rosenthal, can lead to ridding the body of the cascading pain effect.

Natural remedies tap into the body's natural ability to heal and can provide more long-term solutions.

Dr. Oz: Pain Solution #5: Arnica
Arnica is a topical cream, said Dr. Rosenthal, that can be used any part of body up to 3 times a week. [Check the label for more specific recommendations.] Arnica encourages circulation to the area applied and also brings oxygen. Dr. Rosenthal said arnica is also effective for bruising. Dr. Oz called arnica gel as effective as ibuprofen gel without the side-effects and recommends that everyone have arnica gel in the cupboard. Dr. Rosenthal said not to use arnica cream no open wounds or open skin.

Dr. Oz: Pain Solution #6: Pelvic Power Tilt
The Pelvic Power Tilt exercise can be used three times a week to address the core muscles providing strength which in turn can reduce injuries in the joints throughout the body.

Dr. Oz and Dr. Rosenthal demonstrated the Pelvic Power Tilt beginning by laying down on a yoga mat. Place feet flat on the floor with knees up. Slide one hand under the small of the back and feel the gentle curve of the spine then press the belly button toward the spine feeling that press with hand. Next, lift the pelvis up off the floor and hold for 10 seconds. Release. Repeat.

The Pelvic Power Tilt helps with posture almost instantly, explained Dr. Rosenthal. Not only does this exercise strengthen the muscles it can also bring awareness to the core muscles furthering the improved posture.

Dr. Oz: Pain Solution #7: Positional Release Therapy
Dr. Oz said Positional Release Therapy can shut down muscle spasm pain in 90 seconds or less. Positional Release Therapy goes directly to the muscle to stop spasm within 90 seconds and can be used once a week. Dr. Rosenthal said this technique can be used on any muscle in the body.

Dr. Oz Fan Jill has shoulder pain that she rates as a nine or 10. Dr. Rosenthal found the area of maximum tenderness on her shoulder and pressed her thumb right on the area. Then Dr. Rosenthal gently pushed Jill's head toward the sore shoulder until Jill said the pain had reduced to a three.

Positional Release Therapy allows the spinal cord to send messages to the muscles to stop spasming and to relax. Uterine cramps can be relieved with this technique by pressing on the lower back.

Practitioners can utilize Positional Release Therapy on patients. At-home people, can use the eraser end of a pencil to find their own relief. Find the area of max tenderness for the irritated muscle and the eraser end of the pencil on that area applying downward pressure for about 60 seconds or gently move the pencil in circular motion around the tender area.

Pain medications will go through whole body, said Dr. Rosenthal, but this works on the specific pain area.
