In recently breaking news, the FDA has announced that it has found the fungicide, carbendazim, in orange juice imported into the United States. Carbendazim was banned in the US in 2008. How did it get back into the food supply? What is the FDA doing about it? How can you avoid orange juice that may contain the fungicide?

It's believed that one out of six glasses of orange juice in the United States right now contains carbendazim. The FDA found up to 30ppb of carbendazim in orange juice imported from Brazil and stopped all imports. Yet, the FDA has not and has no plans to recall any orange juice in this country. Why?

The orange juice in question has been imported from Brazil. Dr. Oz explained that the issue surrounds imported orange juice and not oranges.

Alissa Hamilton, PhD, orange juice industry researcher and author of Squeezed: What You Don't Know About Orange Juice, explained how Brazil became the major grower of the world's oranges. Members of the citrus industry taught Brazilians how to grow juice oranges and by the 1980's, she say, Brazil had surpassed Florida in juice orange production. Today, Brazil is world leader in production of orange juice concentrate, most of which goes to Europe.

Gary Ginsberg, PhD, Assistant Professor of Toxicology at Yale University [and blogger on DoctorOz.com] explained that carbendazim is known to cause liver cancer, birth defects and damage to male reproductive organs.

So why is carbendazim used? The fungicide is used to speed up the production process which allows country's to get the product out fast.

How does this fungicide get into juice sold in the US?
Carbendazim use is legal in many country's, including Brazil, where it is sprayed onto the rinds of oranges. When the oranges are squeezed into juice, some of the pesticide comes off the peel and gets into the juice. The juice is processed into concentrate and not-from-concentrate products which are then sold throughout the world. During processing, the orange juice loses flavor.

Once the juice product is received in the US, it is mixed with a flavor pack to restore flavors lost during processing. The flavor packs contain essences and oils from oranges.

Dr. Hamilton explained that the essential oils used to make the flavor packs come from the orange peel which has been treated with the fungicide. Therefore the fungicide is entering the food supply from two sources: first, from originating country's application and, second, from the adding the flavor pack which contains traces of the fungicide.

What is the allowable limit, or tolerance for carbendazim?
The FDA nor the EPA have set a tolerance level, the substance is not naturally found so the ideal amount in food, says Dr. Oz, is zero.

The FDA is stopping any import with a tested level of carbendazim at 10ppb or lower and sending the shipment back to the originating country. Coca-cola has notified the FDA that they tested samples that showed as much as 35ppb of carbendazim. The EPA states that exposure to carbendazim at a level of 80ppb is where you start seeing potential health risks.

[What about accumulated exposure? Three glasses of orange juice later and a person may have been exposed to 80ppb in total. What then?]

The Juice Products Association (JPA) was contacted regarding the issue but did not appear on the show. The JPA responded to the discovery of a banned fungicide in orange juice with a formal statement saying, “Orange juice is safe...there is no need for concern.” Read the full statement from the Juice Products Association posted on DoctorOz.com.

Dr. Oz provided a list of written questions to the JPA which they did answer. Read the full list of questions and answers from the JPA to The Dr. Oz Show on DoctorOz.com.

Manufacturers of orange juice in the US say they are testing their supplies however, Dr. Ginsberg says there is no way of knowing how much testing is happening as there is no regulations regarding testing at the manufacturer level. The responsibility should be on the FDA. Dr. Ginsberg stated that he looked back through FDA records and found that there has been no record of the FDA ever testing for carbendazim in the orange juice supply.

Dr. Oz stated that because he keeps hearing these stories he is now worried about our food supply. Dr. Hamilton explained that our food is being supplied from an ever increasing pool of global companies while at the same time, consumers are lacking in knowledge and awareness about where our food is coming from.

How do you know where your juice is coming from?
Companies are required to show the country of origin on the label of food products. Dr. Oz said his bottom line depends on looking at that label.

Orange Juice Safety
  • No need to throw away orange juice right now
  • Look for US-only orange juice – read labels
  • Look for 100% certified organic juice – only 100%, just saying organic is not enough
  • Whole orange has more fiber and nutrients – reach for the whole fruit instead of processed juice

[According to EatDrinkBetter.com, the EPA has set tolerances for carbendazim in apples, grapes, apricots, and bananas as well as the juice from some of those fruits. Author Jon Barnes expresses concern that given the FDA statements about orange juice, consumers will turn to other packaged juices and juice products which may in fact have a greater amount of arbendazim. • Eat sesame seeds
  • Have a handful of pistachios a couple of times per week
Dr. Oz says that by adding 2 – 3g of plant sterols daily to the diet will reduce cholesterol by 15%.

  1. There was a juice that he said would help you sleep and I was unable to write it down.

  2. To my knowledge, Dr. Oz has not recommended a juice for sleep this season. I looked back at all posts that have the word "sleep" and there was no mention of a juice so I'm not sure I can help you. Most of Dr. Oz's sleep related recommendations have centered around lifestyle changes such as room temperature, sleep mask, dim lighting at night. He has recommended valarian in pill form recently for sleep support. I hope that helps.
