Dr. Oz Miracle Plan for Metabolism

[Chris Powell most recently appeared on The Dr. Oz Show on October 10, 2011 when he talked about his SMART weight loss goal along with his Carb Cycle Diet. The post for this episode is the number four most popular post on WatchingDrOz. If you haven't read it, I recommend it.]

It's all about what you eat and when you eat it. Mr. Powell says if you're doing it right you can eat and eat and lose the weight. Understanding how metabolism works is the key to making it work for you.

Mr. Powell shared that he has a new book, Choose to Lose: The 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution, released at the end of December.

Metabolism means changing energy. He says the metabolism is meant to be changed. Dr. Oz says the book is wonderful and he wants Mr. Powell to share the keys to turning up the furnace to burn more fat.

Dr. Oz Metabolism Quiz

To determine the state of your metabolism, Dr. Oz and Mr. Powell has put together a five-questions quiz. [Dr. Oz said this was on his website but it's not there yet, perhaps tomorrow or Monday?]

Metabolism Question #1: Have you successfully lost weight in the past, only to gain it back?
This question establishes your metabolic history.

Metabolism Question #2: Has your weight loss recently slowed or stalled?
What is the state your body is in now? Knowing where you are will help determine how to proceed.

Metabolism Question #3: Do you often skip meals?
Eating patterns can show what is happening chemically and hormonally.

Metabolism Question #4: Do you currently eat a very low calorie diet?
Again, looking at the chemical and hormonal actions and how the body is adapting.

Metabolism Question #5: Have you eliminated carbohydrates from the diet?
Eliminating carbohydrates tells Mr. Powell exactly what's going on with the metabolism.

If you've answered yes to any of these questions then Mr. Powell says that your metabolism has slowed and he can give you the tools to rev it back up.

Dr. Oz Three Ways to Boost Metabolism

Metabolism Boost #1: Eat Every Three Hours with the Power Three Plate.
The Power Three Plate is a portion of protein, a portion of veggies and a portion of either carbohydrates or fat depending on which day within the carb cycle diet you are on. Mr. Powell says to always have protein and veggies on the plate and to alternate carbohydrates and fat for high- and low- carbohydrate days. Be sure to eat every three hours.

Dr. Oz conducted a demonstration of a fast working metabolism [that my daughter called magical.] Dr. Oz used gas burners lined up and showed how eating meals regularly can raise and lower the metabolism and in turn raise and lower the flame on the burners.

Breakfast turns on the metabolism and starts the flame. Each meal and each snack, if you're eating the right foods, will support a strong burning of the metabolism throughout the day. Upon waking the metabolism is at it's slowest point. Skipping breakfast doesn't allow the metabolism to ramp up.

Waiting to eat until later in the day will get the metabolism burning but the late start doesn't allow the metabolism to burn all the calories consumed in a day, even if the total calories are low.

Metabolism Boost #2: Turn Up Your Metabolic Thermostat
Dr. Oz showed a tissue sample of both a normal thyroid and a thyroid that developed a goiter. Keeping the metabolism functioning at full speed will help to support and allow the thyroid to do its job. Mr. Powell says we do this through eating carbs, the healthy variety not the candy bar variety.

Mr. Powell recommends quinoa, sweet potatoes, beans, and legumes. Dr. Oz recommended buckwheat. Using canned beans and lentils is OK but get the low sodium variety. Fruits and veggies are also great carbs and is like eating a multivitamin when you eat in a rainbow of colors.

Dr. Oz explained that cutting carbohydrates from the diet will cut the metabolism by 50%!

Metabolism Boost #3: Build Your Metabolic Muscle
Muscle is more metabolically active than any other part of the body. Chris Powell has two categories of exercises that will shape the body and burn the fat.

Chris Powell Shaper Exercise – Squats
The biggest muscle areas in the body are the legs and the gluteus maximus. Target these areas with good old-fashioned squats.

Chris Powell Shreder Exercise – Three Stages of Moving
Take the muscles that you just built with the squats and put it to work. Three minutes of low-intensity running in place. Build it up to medium intensity for two minutes by running in place with the knees up higher. Last, go high intensity with one minute of jumping jacks.

Dr. Oz Biggest Metabolism Myths

Weight Conspiracy: My Metabolism is Genetic
Zena says her mother, when younger, was thin and then consistently gained as she aged. She thinks she stuck with her mom's later-in-life body shape. She says genetics dictate her weight gain.

Myth or Fact? MYTH!

There is a genetic component involved in weight gain but Mr. Powell says there is a great saying that genetics loads the gun but lifestyle pulls the trigger. He says our foods have changed more in the last 50 years than in the last 5,000 years. Add to that, lifestyle issues and you've got a bit of a challenge to overcome.

Weight Conspiracy: I Break My Diet
Amy says she can't keep a steady diet because she travels often and it's hard to stay on her diet.

Myth or Fact? MYTH!

Mr. Powell says that if you're eating carbs your metabolism is working the way it should and the issue really comes down to burning the calories that you eat. Weight gain comes from eating more calories than are burned. Mr. Powell says it's OK to go off your diet one to two times a week, it's good for you and won't destroy your weight loss goals.

Weight Conspiracy: I Eat Mindlessly
She mindlessly eats at her job at an Italian restaurant.

Myth or Fact? FACT!

It's called blind binging. We are creatures of habit but we can fix that. Mr. Powell says he eats mindlessly too but has navigated around it by rearranging the cupboard. Put the snack foods up higher. Or better yet, when the cravings hit opt for a small snack that contains healthy fat, about 7-9g of fat. Eating a small amount of fat triggers hormonal mechanism that sends a signal of being full to the brain. A serving of string cheese, a tablespoon of peanut butter, or a hand full of nuts are all recommended by Mr. Powell as well as Dr. Oz in his weight loss book, You, On A Diet.

Dr. Oz The Organ That Causes Aging Complaints

There is an organ in your body that may be causing your bat wings, crow's feet and saddle bags. It's the pituitary gland.

The pituitary gland is located in the middle of the brain and it creates hormones, in particular growth hormone. The amount of hormone released throughout the day changes with the largest spike in growth hormone happens at night when we sleep.

As we get older the amount of growth hormone reduces which causes a decrease in collagen, muscle mass is lost and more fat is accumulated.

After age 20, growth hormone activity lowers and doesn't rise again. Can that be changed? Yes. One option is an injection of growth hormone and Dr. Oz doesn't like that. Animals injected with growth hormone have a decreased life-span. Instead, he has a three step plan to support growth hormone.

Step #1: Fenugreek Tea
Fenugreek tea supports balanced hormones and provides energy. [Dr. Oz's website recommends steaming it or drinking it as tea. I think I would go for the tea option. I wouldn't know what to do with steamed fenugreek.]

Step #2: L-Arginine
The amino acid L-arginine is commonly recommended on The Dr. Oz Show. [On previous shows, Dr. Oz has recommended l-arginine for libido support, to support the production of growth hormone and for muscle building.] Dr. Oz recommends taking 2g of l-arginine three times per day.

Step #3: Sleep Mask
This step is Dr. Oz's favorite and the one he endorses the most: using a sleep mask. A sleep mask blocks out the light allowing for melatonin levels to turn up in the brain for a deeper sleep.

Dr. Oz Cutting-Edge Procedures for Your Biggest Body Complaints

Target your problem areas in 60 minutes or less.

Face Lift
Sculpt your face like an artist, says Dr. Oz, with a new procedure available from a dermatologist. New York plastic surgeon Yael Halaas, MD showed how the Artiste Robot Facelife works by demonstrating on Elizabeth, audience member [who frankly, looked scared silent at the prospect].

Dr. Halaas explained that as we age we can lose facial volume. The Artiste machine has recently come out to control the flow of filler injected into the face and provides a more even distribution of the filler. The procedure can take about 30 minutes and the cost is several hundred dollars depending on the the type of filler used.

Psoriasis
Get rid of uncomfortable in privacy of your own home. Cheryl Karcher, MD, Dermatologist, demonstrated the use of Levia, a machine used in the home to rid the body of psoriasis plaques that can be painful and, for many, a condition that reduces self-confidence. Psoriasis plaques are raised, red and scaly.

Levia sends out ultra-violet light to kill the cells that causes psoriasis. A dermatologist will calibrate the machine in their office then the patient takes the machine home and uses it in the privacy of their own home.

Most people with psoriasis also have it on their scalp. Dr. Karcher says the mainstay treatment of psoriasis is topical steroids or light box therapy where you stand in a box at a dermatologist's office several times a week over the course of several months.

With Levia, a patient can administer self-treatment in their own home three times per week. The device costs about $5,900 and is covered by most insurance policies.

Belly Fat
Drop one dress size in a single one hour treatment. Anne Chapas, MD, Dermatologist, shared how LipoSonix can help burn fat. LipoSonix is a high intensity ultra sound machine heats the fat and stimulates the body to burn the fat over the next 6 to 12 weeks. This procedure is suitable for people who already eat right and exercise but just can't seem to lose that last extra inch. It takes one hour in an office and within 6 weeks can start to see the fat melting away.

Dr. Chapas shared that clinical studies show it only takes one hour to lose one inch. This is a permanent solution, it permanently kills the fat cell. The fat is not redistributed and the procedure is non-invasive. Cost runs $2,000 to $4,000 depending on location and doctor.

Dr. Oz Bonus Tip!

Dr. Oz recommends taking 1g of konjac root one hour before eating. He says konjac root is a potent fiber supplement that will keep you fuller longer. Use it especially when you go out to eat.

  1. Sounds like the good, well meaning doctor has fallen victim to a lot of hungry dermitologists.

  2. There certainly was a parade of dermatologists on the show. I was a little concerned about the filler they used for the facial volumizing. What was she using and what are the possible side effects? I'll admit, I'm fearful of injections, especially for vanity purposes.
