Dr. Oz 5 Tibetan Rites: Ancient Secrets to Get More Energy and Vitality

Tibetan monks found a way to slow aging, promote inner peace, and achieve wellness without breaking a sweat.

Pamela Lancaster, Healing Art and Sound Therapy Expert at Miraval Resort in Tucson, AZ, says the Tibetan Rites recognize that healing comes from the inside out and the mind is very important in health. A clear, open, centered mind can lead the body to health, she says.

Seven chakras reside in the body and each have their own energy. Dr. Oz showed where the chakras reside on the body. [Click here to see where the chakras are in the body and more information about the chakras.] Each chakra was represented by a pinwheel.

Ms. Lancaster explained that the chakras listen to the outside world and what's going on inside the body. Every experience is absorbed by the chakras and are assimilated to help spin the chakras. If you're stuck in a chakra it manifests as a health problem.

How do you pull all your chakras together? Opening and aligning the chakras can bring about greater well-being. Dr. Oz and Ms. Lancaster discuss three methods to support the chakras.

Dr. Oz Tibetan Secret to Wellness #1: Sound Therapy
Sound therapy is a method to bring about chakra balance with sound, not just any sound. An audience volunteer laid on a fluffy rug with seven bowls surrounding her. The bowls looked like brass and were arranged in an non-symmetrical pattern. Each bowl has a different sound and are played in sequence creating to resonate and pull energy through the body to clear out the chakras.

If you don't want to visit a practitioner to experience Sound Therapy, CD's are available or bowls can be purchased and the therapy practiced at home. Any number of bowls, up to seven, can be used so it's not necessary to buy an entire set.

Ms. Lancaster demonstrated how to practice Sound Therapy at home with only two bowls. Dr. Oz was the willing subject. A crown bowl was placed upside on Dr. Oz's head and he held a second bowl on the palm of one hand. Using a special mallet, Dr. Oz gently tapped the bowl on his head and bowl in his hand. He raised and lowered the bowl in his hand up to his head and down toward his lap. Dr. Oz said it felt like his insides were vibrating.

Using a CD is another simple way of experiencing sound therapy. Simply lay down, turn on the CD and let the sound work its wellness magic.

When experiencing a stressful moment or realize that negative thoughts have crept into the mind, humming can provide a simple practice of Sound Therapy that can be used anywhere. Humming for 1 to 3 minutes can provide positive vibrations and bring back a more positive state.

Dr. Oz Tibetan Secret to Wellness #2: Supplement to Align Chakras
Monks use the herb fenugreek, a natural anti-inflammatory, to support balancing of the chakras. Ms. Lancaster recommends taking 1,000mg of fenugreek daily, it's also available in tea form. The seeds of fenugreek can be ground and used in curries or other meals. Fenugreek supports digestion and helps with acid reflux issues. [Fenugreek has also historically been used to support milk supply in lactating women.]

Dr. Oz Tibetan Secret to Wellness #3: 5 Tibetan Rites
Dr. Oz has been practicing the Five Tibetan Rites every day and says he feels a new sense of vitality and energy. Sharing this information with his colleagues, Dr. Oz was surprised that there was some controversy surrounding his practice of the Rites. His colleagues didn't believe that these simple moves could be so powerful.

The Five Tibetan Rites are five yoga moves brought together to support health and vitality. Not all Tibetan monks are doing the same five moves that will be demonstrated but they do some variation that changes from village to village. The movements may be different but the idea is get the body moving in a way that supports the chakras.

Dr. Oz has recorded a full session of the Five Tibetan Rites and posted it to DoctorOz.com for viewers to follow at home. He says there are modifications in the session that can be adapted to any fitness level. Click here to view the Five Tibetan Rites demonstrated by Dr. Oz.

Tibetan Rite #1 - Spinning
Stand up, extend the arms out with palms down, spin to the right. Start with 2 or 3 repetitions and build up to 21 repetitions in total. Focus on one point to return to with each spin to support better balance during the spin. Spinning opens up the emotional body. Children do it naturally simply to bring joy.

Tibetan Rite #2 – Leg Raises
Lay on your back, use a mat or soft surface, lift the head then the legs and inhale. Hold the breath a moment then exhale and bring the legs and head down. This move works with opening the solar plexus.

Tibetan Rite #3 – Kneeling Camel
Kneel on the knees, bring chin to chest and inhale. Bend backwards using hands on the back of the legs to support. Exhale and go back to center. This move is to stretch out and open the solar plexus and bring energy to the heart.

Tibetan Rite #4 - Table
Sit up tall on the mat with legs outstretched and arms at the sides with palms on the mat. Bring the butt forward, bringing the soles of the feet to the mat so that only the palms and soles are on the mat and the body makes a table. This move brings energy to the root, or second, chakra.

Tibetan Rite #5 – Upward and Downward Dog
The upward and downward dog positions brings energy to the entire body. [The description of these two moves are rather lengthy. Click the link above to see Dr. Oz demonstrating the move or click here to see instructions for Downward Dog and Upward Dog from YogaJournal.com.]

Dr. Oz: The Chakra Diet

Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary, ayurvedic practioner, says that food and their colors interact with the chakras of the body. Knowing how the color of foods influences the chakras can be supportive of over-all well-being.

Dr. Oz The Chakra Diet #1: Root Chakra - Red
Spiritual representation: feeling centered.
Physical representation: intestines and rectum.

People who experience constipation and diarrhea may have a problem with the root chakra. Pomegranate is biochemically soothing to the gastrointestinal tract. If you want to poop more then eat more pomegranate.

[Other foods that support the root chakra include beets, parsnips, rutabaga, apples. Protein also support the root chakra, according to Dr. Chaudhary on DoctorOz.com.]

Dr. Oz The Chakra Diet #2: Sacral Chakra - Orange
Spiritual representation: creativity and sexuality.
Physical representation: reproductive system.

Fertility issues can be connected with the sacral chakra. Oranges and tangerines support the opening of the sacral chakra. [Carrots, nuts and seeds also support the sacral chakra.]

Dr. Oz The Chakra Diet #3: Solar Plexus - Yellow
Spiritual representation: willpower and self-esteem.
Physical representation: digestive organs.

The solar plexus speaks to a lot of people of how they relate to food. Eating disorders can result from an emotional problem stemming from an imbalance of the solar plexus. Lentils pull out toxins and, says Dr. Chaudhary, give the gastrointestinal tract a warm hug.

[“To gain a clearer sense of purpose and end procrastination, incorporate more yellow fruits and vegetables into your meals, such as yellow sweet peppers, yellow lentils, corn, etc.

It’s important to avoid processed white sugar for this chakra, as it will hinder its ability to perform. Eat more complex carbohydrates like oats, or spelt, millet or brown rice. One thing to note is that exercise forces digestion to work better; aside from food, daily exercise will also be important here.” Dr. Chaudhary on DoctorOz.com.]

Dr. Oz The Chakra Diet #4: Heart - Green
Spiritual representation: love and compassion.
Physical representation: cardiovascular.

The heart chakra is Dr. Chaudhary's favorite chakra and kale is her favorite food. The color green is seen all throughout nature, the most common color in nature is green and is the expression of love. Kale if full of antioxidants that support the cardiovascular system. Love is the most nourishing essence of all the chakras, it's a cure-all, says Dr. Chaudhary. There is a special place in her diet for foods that support the heart chakra and supports how she expresses love in the world.

[“Broccoli, kale, chard, and all other leafy greens are a great source of balance for this chakra. Also, when you cook with love, it infuses the food with this vibration and nourishes not just the body but also the soul by balancing all of the chakras.” Dr. Chaudhary on DoctorOz.com.]

Dr. Oz The Chakra Diet #5: Throat - Blue
Spiritual representation: true authentic self.
Physical representation: thyroid.

The throat chakra is associated with the thyroid and if you think about it, the thyroid is positioned between the mind and the heart. Blue foods and blueberries, especially, support the throat chakra. There is purpose in integrating blue foods into the diet and provide support in speaking your own truth.

[“Kelp, blueberries and blue raspberries are foods that encourage balance in the throat chakra.” Dr. Chaudhary on DoctorOz.com.]

Dr. Oz The Chakra Diet #6: Third Eye - Indigo
Spiritual representation: intuition.
Physical representation: pituitary gland.

The pituitary gland is responsible for coordinating all of the hormones. The third eye represents the opening of intuition. Feeding the pituitary allows for intuitive balancing of the body.

[“The color for this chakra is violet. Any foods of this color will help its function, such as purple potatoes, blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, etc.” Dr. Chaudhary on DoctorOz.com.]

Dr. Oz The Chakra Diet #7: Crown - Violet
Spiritual representation: connection to higher self-worth.
Physical representation: pineal gland in the brain.

The crown chakra is considered the master chakra. Working as a whole, guided by the crown chakra, the chakra system pulls energy up to the crown and down through all the chakras.

[“Foods like plum and eggplant can nourish this chakra. This chakra is different than the rest in one way: The crown chakra is in some ways more "spirit" than "matter." Therefore, the crown chakra thrives on the sustenance that comes from sunlight, air and love.” Dr. Chaudhary on DoctorOz.com.]

Dr. Oz Flower Power for Weight Loss

Dr. Oz this flower power herb brings together weight loss and alternative health: Forskolin.

Lisa Lynn, weight loss expert, says she's seen clients double their weight loss by adding forskolin to their regimen. Forskolin helps to enhance the metabolism.

Dr. Oz looked into how forskolin works in the body and says, yes forskolin does seem to ignite metabolism. Showing a large beaker of water simmering, Dr. Oz explained that this is your metabolism on normal. Rapidly boiling and steaming water, this is your metabolism on forskolin. The effect on the metabolism with the addition of forskolin is immediate, says Dr. Oz.

Ms. Lynn is quick to clarify that weight loss doesn't come from the addition of just one herb, forskolin, it's a combination of several factors. If you want to try forskolin, Ms. Lynn recommends taking 125mg at breakfast with a meal. Start slowly and modify the dose if needed and remember more is not always better.

The ideal candidate for forskolin, says Ms. Lynn, is just about everybody and she recommends it for people who are doing everything right yet stalling out. She cautions that you do have to put in some work with forskolin, couch potatoes won't see results but, people who are active and eating right forskolin can enhance efforts.

Dr. Oz Natural Remedies to Supercharge Sleep

It's the single most important thing to support health and to slow aging: Sleep. Dr. Oz presents four natural remedies to support sleep.

Dr. Oz Supercharge Sleep #1: Feng Shei
The arrangement of your bedroom can effect your sleep. [The principle of Feng Shui is based on the alignment of energy through furniture and accessories in a room or in the home.] Dr. Oz says to consider the following about the alignment of your bedroom:

  • Don't set bed in a corner.
  • Avoid placing bed near window.
  • Have full view of door from bed.
  • Soles of feet shouldn't face doorway

The Chinese say when you die you're taken through the door feet first. Feet toward the door can bring about anxiety. Where do your feet point?

Dr. Oz Supercharge Sleep #2: Snake Plant
Also called Mother-In-Law's Tounge Plant, the snake plant is easy to grow indoors, says Dr. Oz. The snake plant absorbs toxins from and cleans the air. Be careful, people and pets should not eat the plant.

Dr. Oz Supercharge Sleep #3: Grape Skin Powder
Normally Dr. Oz says he doesn't want people eating at night, this is an exception. Grape skin powder provides powerful antioxidants and can improve sleep.

Mix and drink the following two hours before bed:
2 tablespoons grape skin powder
1 banana
2 cups frozen strawberries
4-5 ice cubes
1 cup seltzer water

Banana contain magnesium, potassium and tryptophan all of which support sleep and strawberries have sleep-supporting melatonin.

Dr. Oz Supercharge Sleep #4: Mantra
Mantra is the practice of using repeating words or phrases, that may or may not hold meaning for you, but the act of repeating it provides balances and can bring the mind back to center. Some mantra words could be: peace, love, joy, relax, and serene. The mantra needn't be verbalized. When the mind wanders or when something upsetting or irritating happens saying the mantra can bring the mind back to something positive.
