Dr. Oz Turbocharge Your Metabolism

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #1: Rocket Fuels
Dr. Oz has three drinks that are digested fast but go straight to the metabolism and rev it up.

Belly Blast Hot Shot - In the morning, combine 2 tablespoons of tomato juice with ½ teaspoon of horseradish, a dash of hot sauce and a splash of lime. Hot sauce has no calories yet it revs up the metabolism. Vitamin C in the lime juice will also support the metabolism, says Dr. Oz.

Kombucha Wonder Drink – Dr. Oz says this drink will take all the guess work out of beneficial beverages. Kombucha is a fermented beverage that revs up the metabolism. Kombucha Wonder Drink is made from oolong tea which supports the liver so it can better do its job of metabolizing fat from the body. Replace soda and sweetened iced teas with Kombucha and Dr. Oz says you can lose as much as 7 pounds over the course of a year.

[Kombucha can be an acquired taste, not everyone enjoys the vinegar flavor in the drink. Two other Kombucha drinks on the market that are very poplar are GT's Synergy and Celestial Seasonings Kombucha.]

Spicy Red Icey - Combine a spicy red wine, like a Rioja or Malbec, with ice chips, and a bit of mint. Drink ice cold drinks lowers your body temperature and when the body is cold the metabolism goes up. Mint helps to reduce food cravings at night and the wine provides a bit of relaxation.

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #2: Power Pills
Dr. Oz has three power packed supplements to propel your metabolism into high gear. Concentrated extracts in these supplements to go straight to the source of the things that slow down the metabolism: blood sugar and hormones.

Fucoxanthin – Comes from seaweed and in animal studies has been shown to support the burning of fat. Look a supplement with “xazanthigen” on the label indicating that fucoxanthin is mixed with brown seaweed and pomegranate oil. Dr. Oz recommends taking 200mg daily of fucoxanthin.

Best Price Nutrition has got Fucothin 180 Gels and Fucothin 90 Gels

Sacha Inchi – A seed from the South American rainforest, Sacha Inchi is rich in Vitamin E, antioxidants, and healthy fats that allows the body to believe it is not under attack from inflammation. When the body relaxes it can more easily let go of fat. Dr. Oz recommends taking 600mg daily of Sacha Inchi.

L-arginine – An amino acid that boosts the metabolism and restores hormonal balance, says Dr. Oz. He recommends 2,000mg of L-arginine three times a day.

Dr. Oz says people can combine these products but suggests to start with Fucoxanthin alone first. If you're looking to support the building of muscles then focus on L-arginine first.

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #3: Calorie Confusion Plan
Certain foods amp up your metabolism. Eating the right foods can get your metabolism going and keep it going longer. Trick your metabolism to burn fast all day long. Dieting and limiting calories can actually slow down the metabolism. Dr. Oz recommends alternating caloric intake to support the metabolism. Eat 2,000 calories with a dessert one day and 1,200 calories the next day spread over four meals. This technique keeps the metabolism working hard while eating enough food.

Dr. Oz takes the guess work out of the Calorie Confusion program by putting a 7 day diet online.

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #4: Spices and Spirulina
Vanadium – A supplement that balances blood sugar. Dr. Oz recommends including this supplement in a metabolism boosting plan.

Spices – Take advantage of the metabolism boosting power of spices by utilizing them in every meal. Sprinkle half a teaspoon of black pepper, dill seeds, or parsley on every meal.

Spirulina – A dried blue-green algae that Dr. Oz calls a miracle from the sea. He says your metabolism can blast off with a spirulina snack. Dehydrated blue green algae provides fuel to cells and lets them use as many calories as they need and want. Spirulina is available in a variety of forms. Dr. Oz showed Betty Lou's Spirulina Ginseng Balls and Go Raw Spirulina Super Chips.

Dr. Oz: 5-Minute Metabolism Boosters

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #5: Water Bands
How much water do you drink in a day? Dr. Oz talks about water a lot and he says drinking enough water in a day will support the metabolism. In the morning, put 5 rubber bands on your wrist and remove one each time you drink a 16 ounce glass of water. Studies show that drinking water can boost your metabolism within 10 minutes of drinking and if the water is iced will keep the metabolism up for 30 minutes. In one year, Dr. Oz says you can lose 5 pounds.

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #6: Spice Swish
Combine half a teaspoon of turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger in a glass of water, swish, and spit. The spices combine to look rust brown. Don't drink it, just swish. This may not seem like so much but the spices will stimulate nerve receptors that activates the sympathetic nervous system boosting the metabolism.

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #7: Fidget Factor
Dr. Oz wants you to be jittery to burn calories without exercise. It's known as NEAT: Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Tapping your feet, pacing around while talking on the phone, bouncing your leg can all add to up burning as much as 100 extra calories a day translating to an annual weight loss potential of 10 pounds.

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #8: Emergency Power-Up Snacks
Pack these two snacks to take with you on your day and keep the metabolism burning. Spicy wasabi peas stimulate the metabolic engine. The fiber in the peas will keep you full. Cacao nibs are the raw material used to make chocolate and can help to block fat formation. Cacao nibs have bitter chocolate flavor. Both of these snacks with boost your metabolism quickly, says Dr. Oz.

[Many customers at the health food store where I worked would return cacao nibs saying they were too bitter and didn't taste like chocolate. If you find the flavor too strong to eat raw, try adding some to a smoothie or in yogurt.]

Dr. Oz Best Metabolism Booster #9: Super Power Stretch
Dr. Oz recommends a power stretch yoga pose to work every muscle in the body and aid in burning more calories. He demonstrated the Chair Pose with a twist. [Click here to read instructions on the Chair Pose from YogaJournal.com. Instead of holding your hands above the head in the YogaJournal.com directions, hold the hands in prayer position then turn to one side with the goal of placing your opposite elbow on the outside of the leg. Hold for 20 seconds. Come center. Twist to the other side.]

Dr. Oz Restaurant Secrets Making You Fat

You may never eat out the same again after learning the secrets that restaurant chef's use to make food taste better. What chef's and restaurants are doing could be adding more calories than you ever expected.

Four restaurant chefs, under the cover anonymity shared four surprising secrets:
  • Menu options listed as “light” often contain more calories then what is listed on the menu.
  • If you ask for skim milk in your coffee, the restaurant may still use whole milk.
  • Many restaurants use a flat top grill that keeps meat sitting in grease.
  • Dim lighting in the restaurant makes customers feel less conscience about what they are eating.

Chef Rocco DiSpirito, celebrity chef and author of Now Eat This! Diet: Lose Up to 10 Pounds in Just 2 Weeks Eating 6 Meals a Day!, shares which foods you should avoid when eating out. He says restaurants are making foods that taste good but that means more calories.

Dr. Oz Restaurant Secret #1: Everything is Smothered in Butter
Butter is a chefs best friend, it keeps foods from drying out and gives foods lots of flavor, says Chef DiSpirito. At a restaurant where he used to work, Chef DiSpirito says the foods he prepared packed an average of a ½ stick of butter per person.

How do you cut down the amount of butter? Ask questions. Restaurants want to make their customers happy. If you ask, they will cut back on the butter. A side of Swiss chard sounds like a healthy dish but may contain bacon and 3 tablespoons of butter totaling 300 calories per portion. Ask for green beans without butter and only a little basil pesto for flavor.

Dr. Oz Restaurant Secret #2: The Thicker The Sauce The Worse It Is
Rue is a universal restaurant sauce base containing starting with equal parts white flour and butter then milk and cream are added. That yummy looking gloopy, thick sauce on Chicken Alfredo can bring the calorie count up to 1,440 per serving, a day's worth of calories!

Ask for au jus, the clear juice from the cooking process that has decanted the fat off. The clear liquid tastes amazing on meats and veggies. Balsamic vinegar tastes great on all foods from meat to desserts. Ask the restaurant to use balsamic vinegar or bring your own.

Dr. Oz Restaurant Secret #3: Sugar is Added to Pizza and Pasta
Foods that are shiny have added sugar. Tomato sauce on pasta can have as much as 7g of added sugar.
The same pasta dish could be prepared with diced tomatoes without sugar and can save hundreds of calories. A sugared pasta can weigh in at 840 calories vs 290 calories with a just tomatoes sauce.

Dr. Oz Restaurant Secret #4: If it Ends With a “Y” it's High Fat
Foods on the menu that end in “Y” and described as crunchy and crispy will have a much higher fat content than foods that end in “D” and described as grilled, poached, or braised. [Well, fried ends in “D” and we can all agree that it will contain lots and lots of fat.]

The difference is “Y” foods may have 900 calories and “D” foods may have 300 calories.

Dr. Oz Best Fast Food Meals Under 500 Calories

Dr. Oz sends two renowned heart surgeons to find fast food meals under 500 calories. Dr. Matthew Williams, MD, cardiologist, says his patients call him the reality check doctor when it comes to eating. Dr. Allen Stewart, MD aortic surgeon, says his doctors call him the portion controller. Together, they find healthier options on the fast food menu.

Dr. Oz Best Fast Food Meals Under 500 Calories at McDonald's
Dr. Williams chose the 6-piece Chicken McNuggets with sweet and sour sauce off the McDonald's with 330 calories and 18g of fat. He says you can go without the sweet and sour and save 50 calories. If you like the sauce be sure to use only 1 packet for the entire 6-piece serving. Opt for sweet and sour instead of BBQ to save on sodium as well as calories. Chicken McNuggets is a sometimes food says Dr. Williams and people should only eat it 2-3 times a month.

[Dr. Williams may be saying that Chicken McNuggets are under 500 calories that doesn't necessarily mean the ingredients that make up the product are desirable. FoodMatters.tv have looked into what's really in McDonald's Chicken McNuggets, click here to see what they have to say. And the 17-year-old who has eaten nothing but Chicken McNuggets for 15 years has proven that a diet of Nuggets alone is dangerous to her health. Click here to read more.]

Dr. Stewart chose the McDonald's Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich that comes in at 350 calories and 9g fat and recommends having mandarin oranges on the side. Skip the mayo and save 60 calories and 6g of fat.

Dr. Oz Best Fast Food Meals Under 500 Calories at Domino's
Dr. Williams chose the Tuscan Salami with Roasted Veggies Pizza. Salami is cut thin and has less sodium, fat, and calories than pepperoni. Vegetables add bulk and fiber to the pizza. The trick is to have portion control and only have 2 slices which come in at 300 calories and 12g fat.

Dr. Stewart chose the Low Cheese Pizza with Spinach, Onions, Mushrooms. Two slices of this pizza provide filling protein and fiber with 360 calories and 10g of fat.

Dr. Oz Best Fast Food Meals Under 500 Calories at Subway
Dr. Williams ordered the 6” Veggie Delite on 9 grain wheat bread loaded with onions, tomatoes, peppers, avocado, and cucumber with only 300 calories and 9g of fat. Skip the mayo and add vinegar with no oil to save a few more calories.

Dr. Stewart ordered the Oven Roasted Chicken on honey wheat bread and loaded it up with peppers cucumber, and spinach. He says it was very filling and he didn't finish it all. With only 320 calories and 6g of fat this looks like a pretty healthy option.

Dr. Oz says the doctors could be saving lives today by cutting calories from food instead of cutting people open.

Dr. Oz Four Ways to Flush Fat

There are certain foods that can help your body flush out fat. Dolvett Quince, trainer on The Biggest Loser and celebrity trainer to the likes of Justin Beiber and First Lady Michelle Obama, says foods high in nutrition and vitamins will help support the body in flushing out fat.

Dr Oz Fat Flusher #1: Chia Seed Cocktail
Mr. Quince says to mist 10 ounces of distilled water with 1 tablespoon of chia seed with lemon slices and agave nectar to taste. Chia seeds are high in fiber and fill you up while flushing out the fat.

Dr Oz Fat Flusher #2: Pepitas, Spanish for Pumpkin or Squash Seeds
Sprinkle pepitas on salads and meats for a food high in omega-3, zinc, and protein. Mr. Quince recommends eating 1 cup of pepitas several times a week. The magnesium in the pepitas can support the muscles.

Dr Oz Fat Flusher #3: Daikon
Daikon is a white veggie from the radish family that is high fiber, Use a daikon where ever radishes are called for. Dr. Oz explained that daikon contains enzymes that blasts carbohydrates.

Dr Oz Fat Flusher #4: Super Meal
Mr. Quince's signature dish is Quinoa, Chicken and Tomato. Tomatoes suppress the appetite and quinoa is a grain high in protein known to help flush fat out of the body. [Here are the ingredients that were provided on the show without instructions. Click here to see the full recipe, instructions, and a video clip of how to prepare the dish.]

1 cup quinoa
2 cups chicken stock
2 tomatoes
¼ cup fresh basil
¼ cup fresh mint
2 tbsp olive oil
2 celery ribs
3 garlic cloves
2 chicken breasts

Dr. Oz Bonus Tips! Three Snacks Under 100

Dr. Oz 100 Calorie Snack #1: Pine Nuts
Dr. Oz says pine nuts are his go-to snack because they are full of fiber and stimulate hormones to suppress hunger.

Dr. Oz 100 Calorie Snack #2: Hotcorn
Add hot sauce to popcorn, making Hotcorn, to suppress the appetite. Hot sauce is easy to add without adding calories and you can eat it all night long, says Dr. Oz. Three cups of hotcorn is only 90 calories when you use hot sauce instead of salt or butter.

Dr. Oz 100 Calorie Snack #3: Apples and Cinnamon
Dr. Oz says to put sliced apples in a plastic bag with lemon juice, an antioxidant high in Vitamin C that keeps the apples from browning, and put in as much cinnamon as you like. Shake up the bag to spread the cinnamon. Cinnamon supports healthy blood sugar levels and it's a treat you can snack on all day. [My daughter and I love this snack! We skip the plastic bag and just sprinkle on the cinnamon.]

On that episode Dr. Lindsey Duncan explained that recent studies showed participants lost 17 pounds in 12 weeks with the only change being taking green coffee extract.

  7. Thanks for your disclaimer on Chicken McNuggets. They just aired this episode as a rerun today, and I was horrified by the endorsement of Chicken McNuggets on the Dr. Oz show. He just lost a few points in my book, which is too bad - I generally like and respect him.
