Dr. Oz: The Top Cancer-Fighting Foods Dr. Oz Wants on Your Grocery List

Four women were sent to specific aisles of the grocery store to find the foods they thought would help reduce cancer risks. Dr. Oz specified their food choices must be inexpensive and easy to find.

Dr. William Li, President of the Angiogenesis Foundation and an expert in cancer-fighting research, joins Dr. Oz to discuss some of the latest research into foods and their power to reduce cancer risks. Dr. Li says some foods cut off the blood supply to cancer cells causing them to starve and die.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Foods from the Dairy Aisle
In the dairy aisle, the Dr. Oz shopper chose Chobani Greek yogurt. She's ahead of the curve, said Dr. Oz, because probiotics have been shown to prevent colon cancer. [But yogurt didn't make his cancer-fighting grocery list. Hmmm...]

Dr. Oz's choice for cancer-fighting food from the dairy aisle is cheese and Jarlsburg cheese in particular. Specific kinds of cheese, he said, is getting attention because they have been shown to reduce the risks for lung cancer, the number one killing cancer for both men and women. If you don't smoke you could still be at risk for lung cancer. Twenty percent of women diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked.

Dr. Li says Jarlsburg cheese tastes a lot like Swiss cheese with a nutty, buttery flavor. The key to Jarlsburg's cancer-fighting power is the Vitamin K2 produced by the bacteria that makes the cheese. Studies show that eating foods rich in Vitamin K can provide a 62% reduction in lung cancer risks.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Foods from the Produce Aisle
Blueberries was the cancer-fighting food chosen by Dr. Oz's shopper from the produce aisle. Blueberries is on Dr. Oz's Cancer-Fighting Grocery List. Dr. Oz highlighted bananas from his grocery list. Dr. Li explained that catechins [an antioxidant] as well as Vitamins A and C found in bananas have been shown to prevent breast cancer. In a study, people who ate bananas saw a 40% reduction in breast cancer risks.

Also from the produce aisle, Dr. Oz recommends tangerines and clementines. Dr. Li says the citrus fruits are both sweet and juicy like oranges but are more intense with hesperidin, a flavanone. Studies showed that 490,000 people who drank two glasses of tangerine juice daily saw 42% drop in esophageal cancer risks.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Foods from the Frozen Aisle
The next viewer chosen cancer-fighting food, this time from the frozen aisle, is broccoli. Broccoli is on Dr. Oz's cancer-fighting grocery list but it's not the item he wants to highlight. Dr. Oz featured frozen squash saying it can reduce the risks of a serious cancer, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Dr. Li explained that show people who eat yellow and orange vegetables, such as squash, that contains lutein and zeaxanthin saw a 28% reduction in the risks for Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The advantage of frozen veggies is they are available all year and the foods retain their nutrients.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Foods from the Seafood Aisle
Trina, audience shopper, said she was going to choose shrimp but went with salmon instead because she loves the flavor. Dr. Oz says if you like the taste of these healthy foods it provides a huge step forward as you're more likely to go back to that food often.

Salmon is a great choice and it's on Dr. Oz's grocery list yet he featured squid as a less expensive option. Most people are familiar with squid in the form of fried calamari – not the healthy form he's talking about, grilled or baked squid is preferred. Dr. Li explained that squid contains heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids that can also help women reduce their risks of breast cancer. In a study of 35,000 women who ate a 3 ounce serving of squid, half the size of your palm, regularly their breast cancer risks were reduced by 26%.

Dr. Oz wanted viewers to understand that the studies mentioned in this segment were conducted with thousands of people who saw huge reductions in cancer risks that have not been achieved with drugs. Dr. Li added that the studies were commissioned by public healthcare organizations and not can drug manufacturers showing that real people eating real foods can make power impacts to their health.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Meals and Kitchen Tools

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Kitchen Tool #1: Stainless Steel Saute Pan
Dr. Li shares that stainless steel cooking pans are a healthier way to cook. Stainless steel heats fast and seals in flavor. Cost for stainless steel saute pans average about $40.00.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Kitchen Tool #2: Zester
A zester is used to scrape the skin of citrus fruit – lemon, orange – which has a high concentration of cancer-fighting nutrients. If you're concerned with pesticides found on conventional fruit, Dr. Li recommends opting for organic fruit. Cost for a zester averages about $10.00.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Kitchen Tool #3: Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Dr. Li recommends using extra virgin olive oil EVOO but not just any oil, he says the best olive oils come from the best olives, super olives in fact. Dr. Li explains there are three super olives:
  • Picual olives from Spain,
  • Moralio olives from Greece, and
  • Koroneiki olives from Italy.
These super olives contain high polyphenols antioxidants. How can you tell if your EVOO has these super olives? Dr. Li says you can tell by the color and taste of the oil and look at the label.

Dr. Oz Cancer-Fighting Kitchen Tool #4: Dark Glass EVOO Bottle
Dr. Oz recommends a dark glass bottles and stored in a cool, dark place to preserve the cancer-fighting nutrients.

Dr. Oz Vitamin D Diet for Weight Loss

Vitamin D has been known to play a role in reducing the risks of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and cancer. Dr. Oz says Vitamin D has been called the nutritional darling. Over 3,000 studies have confirmed that Vitamin D is critical for bone health, plays a vital role in immune functioning, and supports healthy inflammation.
New information shows that Vitamin D's most critical role may be in weight loss, appetite control, and burning fat. Dr. Keri Peterson, MD, medical contributor to Women's Health Magazine and one of the authors of The Vitamin D Diet, says Vitamin D makes fat cells more metabolically active, which means burning fat more effeciently particularly belly fat.

Rodale

Dr. Peterson joins Dr. Oz to share, as her book does, how to incorporate Vitamin D into your diet. She explains The Vitamin D Diet is a five-week plan to shift people from a fat-storing mode to a fat-burning mode. Most people will lost the most weight within the first week and by then end of the diet may expect to lose as much as 15 pounds.

The Vitamin D Diet, explains Dr. Peterson, provides a variety of food all rich in Vitamin D to stimulate the hormone leptin which tells the brain that the stomach is full while limiting calories to about 1,400.

Dr. Peterson takes Dr. Oz and viewers through a typical day on The Vitamin D Diet.

Dr. Oz Vitamin D Breakfast – Get Fortified
Dr. Peterson says to look for foods that are fortified with Vitamin D to eat for breakfast. Two fortified eggs with fortified bread can rack up 300iu of Vitamin D. If cereal is your favorite breakfast food then going for fortified cereal with two cups of fortified milk and orange juice can still give you 300iu of Vitamin D.

Dr. Oz Vitamin D Lunch – Go Fishing
Go fishing for lunch to get your Vitamin D. One serving of fresh salmon can provide 1,000iu of Vitamin D. A salad topped with 5 ounces of canned salmon provides 775iu of Vitamin D and pair that with 6 ounces of yogurt can to bring in another 80iu. If you don't like salmon, canned tuna or shrimp are good options as well.

Dr. Oz Vitamin D Dinner - Pick Mushrooms
A unique solution to increasing your Vitamin D intake is to eat mushrooms that have been treated with UV light at end of harvest to increase the amount of D in the food. The Monterey brand mushrooms are treated with UV light and can provide 400iu of Vitamin D in a 3 ounce serving.

Dr. Peterson shared her Mushroom Artichoke Penne from The Vitamin D Diet, a great dinner to boost your Vitamin D and it has only 350 calories per serving. Click here for the Mushroom Artichoke Penne recipe from DoctorOz.com.

Dr. Oz Vitamin D Supplements
Dr. Peterson says for people who may not want to be on the The Vitamin D Diet plan every day Vitamin D comes in several supplement forms from capsules and chewable to liquid. Dr. Oz also recommended getting Vitamin D the natural way, from the sun. Ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure, without sunscreen will provide a daily dose of Vitamin D.
