The Dr. Oz Supplement Hour

Dr. Oz has put together a recap of sorts. Today's episode is a rehash of clips from this season of Dr. Oz's favorite supplement recommendations.

Dr. Oz Belly Blasting Supplement #1: 7-KETO for Metabolism

Loretta shared a picture of herself in shorts and a sports bra. She said she didn't realize she looked like that because she doesn't look in the mirror from her face down. It's sad, she says.

Dr. Oz says Loretta's weight gain is all about the metabolism and there are things you can do to rev it up.

7-Keto is a by product of a hormone in our bodies that help to keep us young. As we age, 7-Keto deteriorates and as a consequence the metabolism slows down. Our bodies naturally make 7-Keto but after age 30 that production slows and if we don't work to support the metabolism as we age then the pounds pack on.

Dr. Oz explained that 7-Keto affects energy in our cells. 7-Keto sends fat into the cells to use for energy. Dr. Oz says he was dubious upon first hearing about 7-Keto but when he looked into he realized that there is something to it.

In a two month study, says Dr. Oz, participants taking 200mg daily in split doses, once in the morning and once the evening, were able to increase their metabolism.

Cost of 7-Keto: about $20.00.

Dr. Oz Belly Blasting Supplement #2: Forskolin to Burn Fat

Clarise also brought a photo of herself in a bra and shorts and says she would like to say goodbye and good riddance to the excess body fat. She's ready for the fat to be gone. Diet and exercise haven't worked for her and it's been a challenge to keep up the effort.

Dr. Oz recommends forskolin to bust fat. Forskolin is found in the root of a plant in the mint family. Traditionally, the forskolin plant has been used to support heart function but research has found that it also triggers a cascade of reactions that melts fat away. Dr. Oz explained that forskolin is responsible for creating a furnace in the cells which allows the body to burn more fat. Watch those fat cells melt way, he says.

Look for a product that is standardized to 20%, says Dr. Oz, and to take 100mg daily.

Dr. Oz Belly Blasting Supplement #3: Caraway Seeds to Fight Bloating

Dawn was choking on her tears sharing her photo in shorts and sports bra. She said she is tired of feeling bloated and can't even look at herself.

Dr. Oz recommended caraway seeds to bust bloating. Caraway seeds have been a food staple for centuries in bread and cheese and is a natural for relieving painful bloating. Rich in vitamins and minerals, caraway seeds are a digestive aid that can support the elimination of gas and bloating.

Feeling upset about where you are is OK, says Dr. Oz, because it can inspires but he says he doesn't want people to feel stuck. You're not the only one who feels this way, he says.

Bloating comes from a build up of bad bacteria, says Dr. Oz, which produces gas. Caraway seeds support the good bacteria in the digestive tract and relaxes the intestines. Dr. Oz says he wants that gas to be passed, to be released to get rid of that bloating.

Dr. Oz recommends eating a handful of caraway seeds in the morning and then again after every meal.

Cost of caraway seeds: about $10.00.

Dr. Oz Belly Blasting Supplement #4: Relora to Reduce Stress

Tammy was surprised looking at her photo thinking she should have gained weight because of the stresses in her life, including appearing on The Dr. Oz Show! As a wife and mom, she finds her day is busy and filled with stress.

Dr. Oz says that stress is the number on reason women gain weight. He recommends using the supplement relora to bust stress. Relora is the combination of two herbs that have been used for thousands of years to promote relaxation. Regulating cortisol, says Dr. Oz, is the secret to relora's ability to burn extra belly fat.

If you gain weight in response to stress, Dr. Oz says that relora could be a benefit. Dr. Oz recommends taking 250mg of relora three times daily at every meal to reduce cortisol, especially at night. Cost of relora: $10-20

Dr. Oz says that supplements can help you over the hump in a weight loss program but you have to do your part too that means eating right and exercise.

Dr. Oz Appetite Suppressant to Kill Hunger – Saffron

Emotional eating happens when you're feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Compulsive eating is brought on by low levels of serotonin in the brain. When serotonin levels are low, depression, anxiety, and over-eating goes on the rise.

Could saffron extract be the miracle appetite suppressant that kills cravings and helps to gain control of over eating? Dr. Oz says this is the first he has heard of saffron. [Well, it's the second time he's talked about saffron this season. On the December 5, 2011 episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Pina LoGuidice, recommended taking 15mg of saffron daily to support a healthy mood.]

Dr. Oz showed an animation detailing how when you eat those carbohydrates you crave they turn on chemicals in the brain: serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrin. Taking saffron extract stimulates those same chemicals without eating the foods and the supplement has no calories.

Dr. Oz says to look for a saffron extract that says satiereal and take 88-90mg, twice daily - the amount studied. In the study, explains Dr. Oz, participants were able to eat whatever they wanted and found that the snacked less and their overall intake was less. Cost for saffron extract: about $30 for a one month supply.

Two audience members, Martha and Devon, are self-proclaimed emotional eaters who agreed to take saffron extract over a three-day weekend.

Martha believes that emotions drive her eating, her kids lead her to eat. After Martha took saffron extract, she says she didn't get the cravings and urges. Over the weekend she attended a birthday party and was able to have a small piece of cake without craving more or hearing a call from the sugar.

Devon said on a scale of 1 to 10, her appetite before saffron extract was at a 10 or 11. She would reach for whatever was around when she was hungry. Over the weekend, Devon said she noticed a decrease in the amount and intensity of hunger says her appetite was more of a 7 on the scale.

Over the three-day weekend, Martha lost 3 pounds and Devon lost 5 pounds just by using saffron extract.

Dr. Oz Top Cancer Fighting Supplements

Dr. Oz says these supplements are the holy grail of cancer prevention and can stop cancer before it can start.

Dr. Lindsey Duncan, ND, naturopathic doctor and celebrity nutritionist, says these four supplements are the big guns of cancer prevention that can give our bodies the building blocks to fight cancer and sometimes it can turn the table in our favor. He says you always want to support your health and reduce your cancer risks through diet and exercise but these supplements will provide significant help.

Dr. Oz Cancer Fighting Supplement #1: IP-6
Inositol hexaphosphate, or IP-6, has been shown in animal studies to prevent cancer. IP-6 is found naturally in seeds, nuts, beans and legumes. Dr. Duncan says it is recommended to reduce the risks of colon, lung, liver, and soft tissue (skin) cancers. He recommends taking 500mg of IP-6 twice daily, once in the morning and once at night.

IP-6, explained Dr. Duncan, is a carbohydrate molecule found in fiber-rich foods that can disrupts the rogue cancer cells.

Dr. Oz Cancer Fighting Supplement #2: Black Raspberry
Dr. Oz says to stop what you're doing and listen to this information because it surprised even him.

Dr. Duncan explained that the active compound in black raspberries that give them the fruit its color, called anthocyanins, is where the healing compounds reside and is supportive of reducing the risks of esophageal and cervical cancer risks. Black raspberries have several hundred times anthocyanins than any other food.

Black raspberries have a very short harvest season, a few weeks, so look for a supplement that contains freeze-dried fruit. Dr. Duncan recommends taking 300mg twice daily. He says one 300mg capsule is equivalent to four cups of black raspberries.

Dr. Oz Cancer Fighting Supplement #3: Vitamin D
Dr. Oz calls this one the granddaddy of all these supplements: Vitamin D. Vitamin D is recommended to be a part of a daily and cancer prevention protocol. Dr. Duncan says that low levels of Vitamin D is directly related to higher cancer rates, especially female cancers.

He recommends taking 1000iu of Vitamin D daily to help reduce the risks of breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. Don't overdo the does of Vitamin D because it's a fat-soluble vitamin that stores in the body. [If you're concerned about proper levels of Vitamin D, a doctor can perform a blood test to determine your individual level.]

Which of these supplements should be in everyone's daily program and which ones can be used to customize a program? Dr. Duncan says everyone should include Vitamin D in the daily program. He won't go a day without taking his black raspberry. He says that people who are concerned with colon, lung, liver and skin cancer risks should include IP-6.

Dr. Oz: The Miracle Pill to Stop Aging

Dr. Oz says there is a miracle pill that help you look 10 years younger, have more energy, and can improve eye sight. It's every woman's desire, says Dr. Oz, to look younger while living longer. He says L- Carnosine may be the key to accomplishing all that. Can carnosine be the fountain of youth?

Carnosine is found in the brain and muscle cells and it keeps the skin supple and the mind and eye sight sharp. As we age, carnosine levels drop by as much as 60%. Science is starting to show that the supplement form of carnosine can have the same effects as the natural form.

[The video showed two brands: Now Carnosine and Jarrow Carnosine.]

Dr. Oz showed a demonstration of how carnosine works in the body with pillows. Proteins, represented by the pillows, can build up and gather up in ways we don't want. The audience helper held four pillows that completely covered her face and towered over her head. Carnosine busts up these proteins and prevents damage to our cells from aging, explained Dr. Oz.

Dr. Oz: L-Carnosine to Support Vision
Changes in vision come from damage from the outside world. Vision problems, cataracts, and glaucoma can potentially be aided with carnosine. Dr. Oz says that carnosine has been shown to improve vision and may have an impact on dementia.

Dr. Oz said we can learn from our family to understand if there are genes that can pre-dispose us to diseases.

Dr. Oz: L-Carnosine to Support Skin
A study that tracked participants taking carnosine for 3 months showed improved appearance and less wrinkles on the face. Dr. Oz explains that carnosine can provide our skin with a more natural resliance to outside factors.

Carnosine is naturally found in meat and is always involved in our tissues. Dr. Oz says it's hard to consume enough meat to compare with the amounts of carnosine that supplements can provide. He recommends taking 500mg of carnosine twice a day, once at breakfast and once at dinner. Dr. Oz says that carnosine can provide huge benefits when started so he recommends starting it at age 30.
Cost: about $40 for a one month supply

    1. Thanks for your question. Black Raspberry supplements are not common though they have probably increased in popularity since being mentioned on The Dr. Oz Show. I used to work at a medium-sized health food store and had never heard of black raspberry supplements until this show.

If you can't find the product at stores in your area they ordering online would be your best bet. I Googled it. Here's the link for what was returned:

      https://www.google.com/search?q=black+raspberry+supplements&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=fflb

  2. On black raspberry capsules, these are simply filled with freeze-dried black raspberry powder if you purchase the more expensive ones. This same powder can be purchased from multiple companies and is vastly less expensive per serving. Black raspberry capsules also do not contain anywhere close to the berries claimed on the show. It would take around 30 capsules to get even 1/2 a cup of berries! I found more information here: http://news.yahoo.com/three-myths-black-raspberry-capsules-demystified-120308605.html

Also I searched through the actual clinical trials and they were all done with many grams of freeze-dried powder, and NONE of them used capsules at all. It is too bad the guest Dr. Oz had on his show didn't know the facts about this interesting berry.
